To make up for last week's atmospheric failure in Kansas it looks like we'll be getting another chance tomorrow. Models are showing a chasable setup tomorrow with a triple point in central Kansas and a dryline extending down through western Oklahoma. Strongly backed surface winds and strong southerly H85 winds are making for some impressive forecast hodos. Shear looks great with up to 65kts bulk and up to 300m2/s2 SRH. 15-20kt storm motions perpendicular to the boundary should make for a good chase. Pinched, weak instability is the only limiting factor I see so far. Target as of now is Russell, KS and points south along US-281 which should put both triple point and the dryline within reach.

There's a risk of tornadoes today in parts of Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma with the greatest risk in the Omaha-Des Moines-Kansas City area. This will be my first chase of 2011 and I'll be using it as an equipment-checking chase to make sure everything is ready for the season. Moisture will be limited and storm motions will be fast but shear is good and that's typical of a setup this early in the season. I won't be live streaming this one but I will be posting updates via Twitter and Facebook as events unfold. |
